I used to forget my lunch
A few times a week at least
I mean this went on for months
Starving at work on my feet
But I'm done grinding my teeth
And finally found the trick's
That I cant get to work without keys
So I leave them in the fridge
Peanut butter honey banana sandwiches

Slow Smoker
Cut celery sticks
rest bundled in my fridge
awaiting cutting up for soup
or slathering with peanut butter
for a snack. However...
Left too long
remaining stalks begin
despite their frigid environs
to oxidize and brown
at both ends:
nature’s green cigars
burning oh, so slowly
as they generate not red-eye coals
or flaking ashes but a nameless
limpid residue.

Sub-Culture
Left long enough alone
in the crisper,
onions
and potatoes
will take matters
into their own hands,
bolt toward light,
feed off each other's skin
and drink their own acidic blood.
The bravest of these
I bury in cow shit
and later use for soup.

The epitome
of longevity
is explored
continually
in my fridge.
Expiration dates
only a mandate
of the state,
a repression of
my immunological
system. Sniff-
Each container
a mystery
of recollection
a triangulation
of when's
and who with's
do I dare
and what the hell's

How to Survive a 90s Comic
Some wives wish their husbands were more heroic
but me, I'm quite content
expecting an end where I don't repose
next to leftover lasagne, bread,
and various spreads and condiments.
We're shown the heroes lamenting their wives' deaths
but rarely the interim, the journey between
their last fight and their first tears,
and who knows? the tale's true villain
could have been banished by couples counseling.
Wherefore the lesson for all ye women
is always shut your mouth
and for ye men, to always prepare
an half-decent alibi.

A virtual cornucopia for this one. Good prompt.
@CRNDLSM - an elegant solution to a vexing problem. In times before the prevalence of automobiles, one might have placed the horsewhip or one's shoes in the icebox. Before that... when did latchkeys start?
@Tiger - Life will find a way, won't it? And hybrid vigor... would the immaculate offspring of potato and onion be a particularly redolent turnip, I wonder?
@brynmawr1 - Bravo, bravery in the face of decomposition! Even when it's not (probably) one's own.
@RiverNotch - Interlocking implications galore. GPS phones provide interesting avenues for alibis.

Thank you for these little summaries, Duke. They really add to the threads.

The Quickie
Fluffy and soft,
light as a pillow,
whispy and light,
as a pussy willow.
Growing so quietly,
living in peace,
until you pull out the meat,
remove the lid, and release
the stench,
the guilt and the shame.
If you were less forgetful,
you could avoid the blame.
So you resort to cheese
on tortillas with peas,
hoping you will appease
the hunger.
