Eight and Counting


This family tradition
we’ve developed -
of irrationally blaming me
for national election results...
though of only eight
years standing–
y’know, I’m tired of it
already.

over in italy. fish salad, fish soup,
fried fish, grilled fish
pickled fish, raw fish,
even for dessert, they have fish
for christmas
over in italy. kids, when they complain
at any point from the 25th
to the 5th, about the fish
they are forced to have
for christmas
over in italy, they receive
a lump of coal
from the witch Befana
instead of gifts. the more enterprising among them,
or else those kids whose only wish
is to be warm
that winter, make sure that their complaints
about what they all seem forced to have
for christmas
never went unheard. because in italy,
they have fish
for christmas
instead of charity.

The jar
of colorful sweetness,
bumping shoulders
with pride and neatness.

You count and multiply,
certain you hold the secret,
ready to bow
when your name is called—
until it’s not.

But it was worth a shot,
for who doesn’t want
that jar of colorful sweetness.

Halloween is fun for sure
I say a prayer for all souls 
Then dress up as a monster
Devil werewolf ghost or ghoul
Honestly though I prefer
Washing off all the face paint
Then the next day say a prayer
For all saints
