there does need to be some acknowledgement of the fact that this is someone's actual, real-time work and to imagine how you might speak differently to them if you were face to face.

Some of the best teachers I've known were blunt to the point of being cruel. Of course, being cruel and clueless is deadly, but we don't get that here often.
Being nice is overrated, I think.
