You could have had a break on leave.

Break me
and leave
me a piece for myself.

Break me,
leave me
with a piece for myself.

If I ran across this without the preface I would never assume so.

If you say it is poetry I wouldn't waste the time objecting

Is there a different between art and poetry?

Or art and literature?

this fucking question comes up about every 6 months... how about this, you figure it out; because i can say with some certainty that no one here has got any more of a clue than you do. and if it's just "interesting opinions" on the issue you're after, then read a fucking book.

and yes, the question is constantly rehashed and it's usually because someone wants to devalue the work artists do by saying "look, I just pulled this out of my butthole and it's of equal value to the life work of that guy who thinks he's some kind of poet".

It's art if you want to call it art.  Is it good art?  That's subject to opinion and you really don't want to hear mine.

exactly! and it actually irritates me that people think that conceptualising something as art somehow makes it better. like poetry isn’t good enough. imagine an architect designing and building a beautiful cathedral and someone going “yeah, but is it art.” to which the only appropriate response would be “fuck off, mate.”

Depends on your definition, I suppose.

Since you can get an MFA with a concentration in poetry or literature I would say the official answer is that both are not only are but “fine” art.

and so it begins. the tedious exchange of definitions leading to inevitable conflicts resulting in hours of pointless debate and intellectual posturing ultimately coming full circle to leanne’s initial statement of plain and simple fact that if you want to call it art then fill your boots. no one cares. unless it’s any good and then maybe other people might start calling it art too.

No, I think literature and poetry are pretty universally defined as art

Immediately when I think of
fine art
fine wine
fine dining
fine jewelry
fine china

I think of quality and/or value,
but is it just perspective?

Little Bubbie's Macaroni Necklace vs. The Crown Jewels

If Mum could take one with her when she dies,
which would she choose? Which really has the
most value? Could Bubbie's Necklace be
Mum's fine jewelry?
there's always a better reason to love

well then, you’ve solved the problem. poetry not only can be art but it definitively is art. sorted. i suspect this question will never be raised again, now that you have managed to expertly clarify the matter.
