Smile now, oh mule, I pray thee ride me not;
nor ply my foolish self with throb or ache.
Do you not play with me (so soon forgot),
And laugh at me, not with, you selfish rake?
Who loveth thee that I make here as penned,
The one you clown, who fatedly grows fond.
Nay, if you laugh, then you must beg to spend,
While I lament our convoluted bond.
What merit does to mine own self respect,
Is not so keen (though manly spirits rise),
When all my best doth worship thy defect:
No ears, no mouth, no tongue, just wicked eyes.
But mule, my love, you must not hold me blind;
Our paths, though filled with jest, are fast entwined.

I loved the 'nay' as well; though, truth be told,
I needed to invoke my poetic license there 'cause mules nay not:
'The fearful noise mad by the mule, which comes in somewhere between a donkey's bray
and a horses neigh, is called by a facetious soldiers "the Quartermaster's band".'

saeity: nice ass...hahahahahahahaha
yeah
Where have i heard THAT before?
Now, about the poem...I am truly enamored of this erudite wit. Sonnets are not easy to master. Perhaps going beyond the studious and serious and into humor is testament to your skill.

Yes, I find writing sonnets, even the "de-evolved Shakespearean"
type (to quote the ever-picky Petrarchanista Leanne), is almost as
hard as capturing the spirit of haiku in English. But what made this
sonnet particularly difficult was that I decided to write it in
Shakespearian dialect (mainly because of the ironic legitimacy it
lends to puns and wordplay).
Never again!
That damn dialect is a virus; it creeps into anything and everything
you try to write. I have returned to my klepto-Imagist roots and
intend to stay there.
Ray
P.S. 'Studious' and 'serious' continue to elude me.
'Humor' is a testament to my childlike cynicism.
P.P.S. Your amore leaves me pathetically happy.

Asses are made to bare
I found some Imagist roots in my vege patch the other day. They had turned my potatoes purple and were trying to convince the carrots that they were superior to sticks. I dug up at least a pound of them and carted them away in my red wheelbarrow.
It could be worse

Gosh, I hope you didn't throw them away; the white chickens just love them.

Me And The Mule
- Langston Hughes
My old mule,
He's gota grin on his face.
He's been a mule so long
He's forgotten about his race.
I'm like that old mule --
Black -- and don't give a damn!
You got to take me
Like I am.
