I’m not communicating my soul to you.
The soul is a writer’s device,
a way of justifying pain.

I do not believe that the 21 grams
which leaves the body after death
contains some abstract notion.

As humans once we’ve departed
there is no queue to be met by psychics;
we’re simply brunches for the worms.

But if I accept this theory,
this theology of nothingness,
why need I worry at all?

What was the purpose of all the breakdowns,
the pills I took to reach this point,
the cash I give my shrink each week?
