Find the truth before evidence decays.
Rain outside descends lightly all around,
glistening on cars, uniforms, the stray
cats inspecting all the commotion. Found
in his cell phone records, some nasty texts
Sue did send about money he owed her,
sex gone wrong, her being 'another ex',
double motive maybe. Heard Dave whisper,
'She's with Mark now, he grinds the rusty frames
and repaints them, but they're not killers.' Cap-
tain scrolls further, some suspicious names
wanting him to switch over to 'whatsapp',
signs of Instagram scams, side-hustle scores.
Time to rummage through the classified drawers.

Let's pretend it's April
which means the sun will shine
so harshly that he fries
eggs cracked on the roof
while whatever's underneath
is baked or steamed or roasted
lacking an air con.
Let's pretend it's April
which means we'll make like fools
Kinsey and his troop,
we'll show them it's not heat
that stops us having fun:
we play at more than rabbits
when we're moved to fun.

Sea-Play
How could any thing so pure
and faultless be so dangerous?
Sea-dragon’s neck, ice-white,
bent down to sip a drink
of ocean from his cloudy castle
nothing like his land-bound
brother Whirlwind sooty gray
with refuse he sucks up
gnaws and spits out
that rooting beast.
No, here’s a white mer-elephant
bigger than a headland, trunk
sunk in the sea. He seems
a playful beast, a curling column
marble wine-vine up to heaven
now that we ride iron steamships
which a twitch of steering wheel
evades him, mostly. Not
the galley’s nemesis,
rower’s ruin, younger
dragon splinters ships,
devouring sailors.
