Random Prompt #19
#1
Write a poem inspired by a False Prophet.

Bonus points for using the words "pearls," "swine," and/or "bowling."

*** a reminder that prompts are not rigid. Poems about lipstick, pinkeye or gout will not be considered out of place.

False in Prophecy

There have been prophets–
Sabatai Zevi, Jacob Frank,
Aleister Crowley, for that matter–
whose message was,
Do What Thou Wilt:
I’m your Messiah and
now I am here,
the old Law must retire and,
to prove it’s so,
you MUST do all those things
old Law prohibited.

Leading to scenes scandalous
in two ways: first, the lewdness,
then the wink as prophets
took on temporal approval
and office from the Powers
That Be.

Then there were prophets–
one, Martin Luther King, Junior–
who saw, not license
but salvation in a future time
when all would shine forth
by content of their character
and none be denied for any
other characteristic.

But his vision, twisted
by the Powers That Be
and his own moral frailties
became its opposite where only
outward characteristics,
not quality of character,
were counted.

So, false prophet, King?
False in foretelling, yes,
but let us hope
not false forever.

Twenty thousand full up front
Covers rent for 20 months
Phones, electricity,
Employee pay, taxes,
Advertising market stunts
Hustling in the endless hunt
Signs and security
Insurance packages
Selling something no one wants
To find the time to rest for once
Peanut butter honey banana sandwiches

A good accountant can show a false profit,
balancing pearls with dung:
too high, the taxman takes it all; too low, the bankers run.

Bonus points you said? For bowling?
Larwood, he bowled like one
possessed by the devil of speed, not controlling
line and length just for fun.

And something about swines slapping lipstick
on themselves, and a pink reindeer.
What a mind you have there, clever dick,
bold as a grouse in Grasmere.

the last line didn't make any sense, but nothing is out of place on this thread, so...
