It is unfortunate when one lacks the ability to discern the difference between a "unique style"  and that which is (for lack of a better word authentic). A person can lift (as in steal/derive) the "style" of another to the applause of millions, while another can sing with a genuine voice to only closed minds.

Does following one statement by an incongruous non-sequitur make one think he/she is somehow being deep? I suppose such thinking would follow from such a writer.

And yes, it seems rather odd that anyone would rubbish the notion of writing in a unique style. One must suppose these are the same types who eschew punctuation because cummings did, or wax lyrical about the link between root vegetables and suicide a la Plath.
