My second attempt, hopefully less cryptic crosswordish.
By controlling those around me
I dominate my neighbourhood.
I am known as a wanderer,
I retrace the same old path.
You may see me as inferior or superior,
it all depends upon my point of view.
It's true that I'm dim, however upon reflection
you're sure to find me somewhat illuminating.

Mark, I want to say the moon, but it also could be one of the planets./Chris

That's close enough for me Chris, the answer is actually just 'A Planet' but I can see where you might think it was the Moon.
One of the definitions of a planet is that they dominate their immediate neighbourhood. Also the word planet comes from the Greek 'planétés' meaning a wanderer, because to the ancient Greeks they appeared to wander back and forth across the sky as opposed to stars which had fixed paths.
I'll keep practising writing more riddles.
Cheers,
Mark
