A Father’s Love

A Father’s Love

Time to spring, its mating time,
greening grass, dandy-lions:
dandy-boys and pretty girls,
Easter dresses, hair in curls.
Call her out, play red rover,
lay her down in emerald clover,
up the hill to fetch some water,
just remember she’s my daughter.

Come and see my brand new rifle,
with her affections, you think to trifle.
I’m an old man I’ll pay the price,
I’ve been already once or twice!
So just remember this young sir,
if you think to flirt with her.
I’ll be on you like corn on cob,
Your little tail, I’m sure to bob.

So don’t be thinking, what you’re thinking,
nor take her out to do some drinking.
Do not give her any liquor,
to make her easier, and quicker.
I know just what you have in mind,
I’ve thought it too, a couple’ times.
So mind your P’s and your Q’s,
I’ve got a piece of advice for you.

Just turn around and go away,
far from my house you’re best you stay,
This girlies Dad’s been ‘round the block,
And knows just how to clean your clock.
So go fool with some other girl,
an easy mark whose toes you’ll curl.
Cause if you fool around this stead,
I’m likely just to shoot you dead.

Erthona - I definitely enjoyed this work as I'm a father too. When you've walked the walk, you can talk the talk, especially to some "full of himself" youngster who's just starting to walk and barely starting to talk. There's nothing more ominous and to be respected than a father who resultingly has gone into a stark protective mode from Hell. Most enjoyed the craft and intent of your words. They bring back fond memories. Namyh

Hyman (Forgive me, I just couldn't resists), I never knew until I had children how much you could love someone, in such a totally unconditional way. I would do anything to keep them safe, and there is no question in my mind that if it came to it, I would die for them.

Thanks for the comments.
