i spent about 6 hours sorting out some audio books today. upped a few poems and did some work on the site. i could knock out a poem in 20 or so minutes but it would be shite. it's def a lack of time. i have to do one thing or another. my family also need some of my time.

before the site got busy i posted a fair bit of poetry but now i'm lucky if i get one a week out

Actually, that's not what you are saying, look back at what you wrote. You spent time doing other things that you would rather do. If you would rather write a poem every day, that is what you would do.

(anyway, this is the first time "quality" entered the discussion. It might be tough to write 2 or 3 quality poems a year but I don't think that should keep us from writing)

Look at what we did with the NAPM exercises. You can definitely write a poem everyday. Of course you can. It's a matter of sitting down and doing it.

actually, i'd love nothing better than to say fuck it and not do any work on the site except write poetry. somehow i feel obligated (and no i have no idea who to ) to make sure the sites as good as it can be. i may take a break from time to time but as i'm spending less time with the family, any breaks go on them now. don't get me wrong, i do like doing it but it's easier sorting a poem out when your head isn't full of all the shite you've been going over and over.

The reason I keep flogging this wound isn't because I am a masochist but rather it leads off a conversation I was having with someone else the other day and I do love being the devil's advocate.

I am pretty lazy, especially as it comes to writing, and settling yourself in and writing can be hard. It is easy if you are inspired, but inspiration comes along at its own, plodding unpredictable pace. I can go months without writing anything and just use the excuse "I am not feeling inspired or creative, but it is a self feeding cycle: the less I write, the less I feel like writing. I tested my theory out and made myself write 4 poems a day for a couple weeks. After that, I had lines of poetry running through my head almost constantly.

I am betting that if you worked in a Chinese "poem sweat shop" somewhere and were required to work 12 hours a day writing poems with a quota of a minimum of 12 sonnets a day or you wouldn't eat - - - you would write.

it's probably not something you actually intend to do; it's
a daydream/fantasy like learning Spanish, or spending more
time with your sister, or volunteering at the homeless shelter,
or some such.

I have a friend who's passionate about writing fantasy stories
but has four kids. She gets up at 3am and writes while everyone
else is asleep. She also 'forgets' her kids soccer games and most
other social commitments, has an overgrown garden, neglects paying
her bills, and routinely screws up other aspects of her life.

She wants to do it and she does. (Maybe she should daydream
about it instead?)

P.S. I force myself to write a poem every 2 to 8 weeks unless I
decide not to.

I got no creativeness since the medication and actually have to sit and think and sit and try to conjure something that is different from the normal poetry and still lack an ability to really say it like I'd like to say it. I might push out one rough poem every other day. I'td be wicked to try to write for 12 hours straight just to see what comes from it.

I think if you had to do it you could, it is an interesting test to see what you can produce.

I have written plenty forced out and plenty inspired. For me, it is easier to be inspired but I bet the reader can't tell the difference.

honestly, I have been continuing to write poetry each day - almost in defiance of the natural laws, since this discussion began.

I don't understand why someone would obligate themselves to writing poetry daily if they don't enjoy it, want to, feel inspired, etc. Poetry is art. Art exists for the sake of our own expression; for the artist, not the product. Why enslave yourself to an art form you don't naturally lean toward?

Why do people obligate themselves to write /anything/ daily? Easy, it isn't going to write itself. I think you are mostly incorrect as to why poetry exists. You are most likely pretty incorrect as to /how/ it popped into existence as well. People who write /good/ poetry work at it. Mostly daily. People who write /great/ poetry work at it as a full time job, usually using lectures, teaching, administering or librarying to pay the bills while they do.

I used to force it and it worked so-so, but now I only write when I feel like it. Much better.
I used to carry a tiny recorder around for taking notes about potential poems or actually dictating them.
I'd go for months writing 5 to 10 poems a day. I was obsessed. Then I got a decent medication and I
stopped writing maniacally. It was a great relief. The poems? Most were crap, but some were quite good.
I refer to them for inspiration sometimes. The bad ones are particularly helpful as I feel a great urge
to make them better.
It's hard to believe that person was me as the poems seem to be written by someone else.
Oh, wait, I WAS someone else.
