Perambulator
#1
He stands before a throne
of formica oak, a clip-on
microphone transposes every
whisper to the reverberated rumble of God

It's hard to see the screen (Spielberg
is at his best) when a billet-shark
trades equities of Malaysian
labors and a matron spares the rod

but

who didn't follow the path that day?
Sandals walked an elegy of fishermen
toward a choir a Persian
King had never walked.

In Carol's hash-smoke clouded
attic, me and Jimmy crowded
around between sips of malt. "I'm
gonna talk to God," I said. Trace

and Carol joined and pushed the token
to the right, though maybe it was me.
"Ask for a car," laughed Trace as she
ejected a plume in the visage of Christ.

Maybe nothing happened when I asked
the same question Peter did that day
(and Abel and Stephen) and maybe I'll
never know if I'm my brother's keeper.

I think my knowledge of biblical/religious references may be letting me down with this one but can a hazard a guess that this is about drug abuse (perambulator = trip?)? Another compelling read that makes me feel stupid

I find this poem fascinating, and much like catcherin I'm somewhat bemused by it. Even though I don't fully understand it, I'm still very intrigued by it.
So many biblical references, please put me out of my misery, I think I'm half way there.
I suppose what I'm asking is "where are you going Lord, with this?"
Excellent stuff.

43mins 37seconds later..... I found a composer called John Carpenter who wrote an orchestral suite called "Adventures in a Perambulator"
Jesus - Carpenter, see what youve done to my head, set me free oh Lord.

Had another read through, maybe I'm off, but are the first three stanzas about a funeral and the last two about some doing a ouija board whilst intoxicated? Was the funeral the brother?

It was just different takes on finding religion, where people find it and how, and how people relate to god. I read somewhere that even though man gets to talk directly to god for most of Genesis, the first question asked is "am I my brother's keeper" and the rest of the bible is an attempt to answer that question.

Anyway, thanks for the thoughts.
