Vaccines should be saved for very serious viral attacks such as TB, tetanus and hopefully one day HIV. These are attacks that our antibodies cannot properly defend themselves against.
By giving vaccines for something as common as (in)flu(enza) you're helping the mutation of the virus into more dangerous strains which you are less likely to be able to resist.
So let the kids have the cold. Or the flu. But this was a 2 year old baby and as tragic as the story is, it's not unheard of,albeit rare, (as Benny mentioned) for babies to die of common viral infections.
