Well I do like crude things. Some people, I guess, say that he was no better than a child scribbling in a lot of his paintings. But I know from being prone to similar mystic states that he talked about in his letters, being out in the open fields and in the woods, especially in spring, can send you off into frenzies. I think he had a lot of control considering what I know of those intense spinning sensations. I think he captured it well. In some of the funny farms I've been to, they have his work on the walls, I guess so the patients won't feel so bad about themselves. There's a real spirit that comes through in the paintings. A lot of practice and skill too, but that's obvious. But I think it's the spirit that attracts most people to it.
