plates crack upon impact with the tiles
that coat my kitchen floor,
my mother stands between marble counters,
peering at me through eyes of haze,
recognition does not register.
as I stand, stoic and solid, I wonder
which one of us has truly gone fishing,
which of us has seemed to
misplace any sense of mind.
I lay beneath cotton and threads,
the television blares in the hallway,
colors flicker on and off my doorway.
I lay still, clenching and unfurling fists,
afraid that the madness that lingers
in the air, all around me,
might seep into my skin as a I sleep,
and that I might awake with eyes like
kaleidoscopes, living in various shades
of blunt and brittle reality

first of all, just drop the centre align. It is unpretty, pretentious and utterly purposeless. Second, don't tell me what it is all about...the poem should do that.
Right, off we go. Here we have a concept cliche BUT there is nothing wrong with that because when concepts are cliches, cleverness is called for. Will you do it? Well, just using silly language won't be enough. Tiles do not coat anything...remember that for the future. Tiles "lay" on the floor. Small point? Yes, maybe...but symptomatic? We shall see.

peering at me through eyes of haze, No. Silly language again. Glazed would be acceptable. Through eyes glazed. Cliche trumps clumsy everytime. Glaze/tiles / urn might be interesting. Your poem.

I lay still, clenching and unfurling fists, You are beginning to sound like a small island off the west coast of Scotland famous for its whisky. Still, you are thinking this through and "seeing" the poem. To avoid the "clenching and unclenching fists" cliche, it is not enough to simply stick in an alternative word...especially an inaccurate one. Unfurling...sheeesh!

[b][b][b]You are in credit with the madness in the air line....but how did we end up here? I think you have something conclusive to say but you messed up. It is not over. You should have another shot at this. Imagery is everything in thought-poetry. After all, that's all there is. You can do it if you think about it.

Yes to what Tom said. Also, this is twice too many words and half too much poem. I don't think " eyes like
kaleidoscopes" describes what the speaker is fearing very well, which I infer is either some form of dementia, or bi-polar disorder, that she fears she might get/have in the future. However this is a shallow painting at best as I never feeling an emotional attachment with the character, that is to say, I never care what happens to her. If I do not, the poem has no impact on me, and that is from someone who has lived in this enviorment.

peering at me through eyes of haze, I'm not so sure about this line - eyes of haze? I'm actually terrible for putting words in jumbled order for poetics sake if I like the way it rolls, but here I'm not so sure personally.

of blunt and brittle reality Okay, this entire stanza personally to me blows the first out of the water. This is absolutely excellent and I love it so much. If I were you I'd probably re-write the entire first stanza because this outshines it by far in my humble opinion!

Hi Amy,
What stood out for me in this poem were the last four words: "blunt and brittle reality", the first two words: "plates smash", and the eyes of the mother ( first stanza: description of her eyes and last stanza fear of waking up with those eyes). A suggestion might be to whittle down some of the words in the first stanza and perhaps change the order of the lines so that the focus is drawn to the eyes of someone who doesn't notice/care that plates have smashed. The theme of eyes being a window to a "blunt and brittle reality" is one that interests me and is a powerful one. The word "kaleidoscopes" made me think "fractured vision".
