So I'm becoming a contributor for an online publication. Has anyone here had experience with that or wanna give me a few pointers, or tell me what it means? Is there any room for growth? Were you paid? Are people usually paid?

Depends on the publication -- if it's one you're proud to be associated with, go for it. If it's a dodgy little "we'll publish anything with tits in it" type of job, you might hesitate...

But you have excellent taste and I know you'd only go with one that publishes clever things with tits in. Generally speaking, these are not paying gigs although some will throw you a token $10 or so. The advantage to contributing to such pubs is that you get another credential to list when you're going for actual paying gigs (because those are the ones that are always super impressed to see a list of how much you've been prepared to prostitute yourself to goodwill before you've crawled across their hallowed thresholds). Room for growth? Probably not, at least not immediately. Room for greater acknowledgment of your achievements as a writer? Again, as long as it's something you're proud to be associated with, go for it.
It could be worse

you won't be paid. but it is super cool, and 'super cool points' must be better than any monetary reward, i'm sureSmile it may save you an ear.

If you were going to be paid they would have discussed it up front.

I've written for online pubs in the past. My advice would to find a specific area of interest. Find thirty or forty tweeters, especially those who publish pictures (as you can be sure they are genuine) and who are in the loop of whatever it is your are writing about, find two or three local press agencies (foreign language news agencies are ideal as 'journalists' are generally too lazy to use google translate, and you can get scoops easily), and join a few relevant forums. Then cut and paste the information into a story, with a bit of padding to fill out the word quota.

Only ever look at the MSM to see what they are writing about, and never write about or react to any of it. These pubs are generally stringers and only want stories and angles that they can sell on - whatever they might say in public.

If you stick to one subject, and work hard enough, and have a bit of luck, you will start to make money - maybe even serious money.
