Google is between a rock and a hard place on this.
If they comply with Chinese law, they are subjected to criticism in the rest of the world.
If they don't comply, and lift the censorship, then they are in violation of the Chinese laws.
i agree, they are. but in an instance like this does it matter.
personally i think they should say okay we'll leave. till you get your act together. sometimes the criticism of the world can be too much a pressure to endure.

Google moves China search service to Hong Kong

Quote:Google said traffic to its mainland Chinese search site google.cn is being redirected to google.com.hk, following unsuccessful talks with Beijing about operating an uncensored search engine in the country.

(...)

Google said that it intends to continue research and development work in China and maintain a sales presence there, though the size of the salesforce will be partly dependent on the ability of mainland Chinese users to access google.com.hk.

A former British colony, Hong Kong is a special administrative region of China and enjoys more freedom, including an uncensored Internet, than mainland China.

Google had flagged its intention to withdraw from China, the world's largest Internet market by users, in January when it said it had detected a sophisticated cyber attack on its computers that it traced to China.

How will this unfold? They may just prohibit traffic to google.com.hk Confused

yep. i think if google try and keep the engine running there china will outlaw it in all it's terrortoriries. i think the internet in general should sever all conections with china. see how fast they change their minds once they see that without an outiside connection to the web their economy will ultimately decline beyond an acceptible limit.

Do you think so? I mean with 1 billion people - they could easily create their own "china wide web". Confused

The freedom to information should be basic for any free country. Yet China doesn't get pressured nearly enough on this issue because they're a rich market.

The right thing for Google to do is walk away on principle.
PS. If you can, try your hand at giving some of the others a bit of feedback. If you already have, thanks, can you do some more?

yes i think.

without the web china would become secular, have no trade, no income as such, little innovation. they already have a virtual china web as it is.
imagine how hard it is to run a country the size of chine without global economic transactions. most of their revenue comes from exporting. the web plays a big part in assisting them with it. banking, and money transactions. much of it is now web based. imagine their currency rates and how bad they'd become if the worl shut the internet shop to them. imagine how fast a billion people would eat away any gdp they have. remember many of the 1 billion are out of work or on the poverty line.

chnia needs the rest of the world more than the rest of the world need it. of course we sell our produce there but nothing like they do here. imagine if all chinas products were stopped. people would buy our products. we'd have lower employment and higher gdp.

china needs the internet. twittwer google and facebook aren't the internet.
banking, instant information, and accounting is the real internet.

cut the internet access and you'll find many companies won't deal with china. if you can't contact them via the net, if you cant advertise via the net if you cant order or do business via the net you're fucked.

china would eat itself in ten years without a net to utilise.

Don't get me wrong Billy you are correct. But the West needs Chinese exports. A large percentage of manufactured goods are made in China. The West would starve itself if they cut trade with the country that supplies them with cheap mmanufacturing and labour. With or without Internet.

China is in the power position here. They are a large share of the market and cutting them out wouldn't benefit anyone.

And not to mention, the West has huge debts with China. China has alot of leverage at the moment. That's why they have been able to dodge international arguments (ie that British guy with the drugs, Google, kidnappings...). So stopping trade and "growing our own" would not suffice.

true to a point dan or it was maybe 10 years ago. now we have the emerging markets of india. and pretty soon africa. the western economies are so bad now that they need more homegrown jobs and less imports. china on the other hand needs and wants the foriegn imports. the luxury goods market is booming over there now. so much so that if it stops china would face a backlash not seen before.

as for the debts. if ties were cut and sanctions set. the non payment of debt would be the first sanction on the board lol.

one of the main reasons china is doing so well is that it doesn't peg it's exchange rate as it should be set. it always make sure the rate works in the favour of china. thats one of the main contentions when it comes to free trade talks. they're not playing fair.

as well as india, russia is also opening up it's market place to imports in a much larger way.

as for labour. the slack would be taken up by most of the asian countries.
whilst china has a huge population only a small percent do any actual work.

i have to agree that china is a necessity for the growing market of the west. thats the the main hold they have over us. a place for us to sell our goods. imagine how strong google would be if it could be number 1 in china as well. so yeah it would be very hard to turn our backs on china.
