By no means am I saying that I'm better than anyone.
I can however, write.

The title of the thread is "are crazy folk better at poetry" and you answered "most definitely".

I'm crazy. At least, I was once---and sometimes I think I slide backwards.

I think I'm decent at poetry....and to be honest, I love Poe, Plath, Parker, Woolf (no, they don't all start with P) but they were all completely batty. I wonder if being in touch with things that most people don't comprehend may make your mind open to vivid imagery.

Or then, perhaps it just comes off as crazy to normal people. I certainly wouldn't know!

As a PS to Intricate B:

Word salads (god, I love that word) are a symptom of schizophrenia, but that doesn't make them understandable to a witness.

I find that good writers are good at poetry, oh and people that put in the work.

Being crazy isn't much different to me than having a persistent high. I know some people who have certain mental illnesses and can overcome them to write good poetry, but thinking that crazy is the one way ticket to genius is likely to result in disappointment (but if you're truly out of touch maybe you'd miss all that).

I had a friend who thought he did his most creative work on shrooms. He didn't. It was a jumble and a mess when he came back to himself. I think crazy is the same way. If you're crazy and you write well, you've overcome the issue, or found a way to make it work (Philip K Dick for instance with his sci-fi).

So again, good writers tend to write better than non-good writers.

No surprise.

i'd say the question should be;

aor poets more better as crazy

the answer being a resounding yes. i'm excellent at articulation but not so good with smaller vehicles like cars etc.

A little crazy is always preferred in my experience.. in writing, in friends, in lovers. Maybe not so much in a doctor though... ?

In my life I have met one person who was crazy an a thousand who made the claim. The crazy person (a lady of sorts) lacked the sanity to wash herself and not shit in her panties so she stank and her hair was a crazed mess of tangles and dreadlocks. She wasn't sane enough to brush her teeth so the stench of her gums, rotting in puss, was spit with every word. She mostly just dribbled down her shirt, drank a lot and smoked but sometimes she shouted random phrases. As awful as she was, I suppose she was still more poetic than the thousand pretenders.

i'm of the mind really crazy people are under the assumption that everything is normal in their lives
though i'm sure the crazy being referred to in this thread is the "different than most" crazy which sort of makes everyone normal. i don't see depressed as crazy or hyper or overly happy like me

so yeah crazies are better at poetry but so is everyone else as well

I have yet to meet a "same as most". My opinion is if you can function in society without killing people or setting your hair on fire there is a good chance you are sane, take some pills like every other person I meet.

bandwagon...I'm kinda serious. But here's a short poem I wrote about it.....I apologize in advance for the thread hijack, but it is pertinent.

As if that line were
thin and black
and not a gray fog,

I am outlined by red watercolor,
awaiting the rain.

What I find intriguing is that most manifestations/symptoms of mental illness are regular states of mind or biological physiology, i.e. panic, paranoia, depression, neurosis, fight or flight response, aggression, mood swings, etc. When these normal states of mind and body flail out of control, begin to dominate one's life or happen without the knowledge of the individual, is when it becomes 'mental illness' and devastating. Know it, own it and you can probably control it. Definitely use it in your poetry!

bena, so you go and post a poem I'd like to critique. It's Pavlovian I swear.

Back to the question, I would be willing to say "crazy" people are affected in their perceptions of the world. In a less debilitating sense so are unconventional Walter Mitty types. They may blend in but their inner life is radically different than those around them.

Unconventional thinker probably gets you there.

If average people are by definition average, then unconventional might be one standard deviation. Crazy might be two. You probably only need one, and two or more is likely to affect function.
