I don't think so, they most likely just /think/ they're better - being crazy and all. I generally hate most "crazy person" poetry - with rare exceptions.

when i used to do coke, i'd scribble stuff down; a few lines of poetry or a quote, and think at the time how fucking awesome it was. a couple of days later i'd find a piece of paper in my pocket with gibberish all over it Big Grin
many poets took mind bending drugs and seem to have written some good poetry.
maybe we just write shit poetry in general Big Grin....that's no reason to give up though Wink

I've never bought this idea that madness equals great art. My mum and stepmum were as mad as a weasel's aunt, yet neither of them had a creative bone in their bodies, so far as I know. These days we're so interested in artists' personal lives that I think we create this myth about madness equalling artistic talent, when in reality artists as a group are just as prone to madness as plumbers, doctors or shop assistants. The art itself doesn't seem to be enough for a lot of people; they also need a tragic backstory filled with heroin and schizophrenia. Call me uncool, but I enjoy Pam Ayres just as much as I do Kurt CobainBig Grin

I don't think there is any relation between being crazy and writing good poetry. Does medication affect someone's ability to be creative is another question altogether. I know from my own experience that psychotropic medication affects all aspects of life and it also affects your perception of things, so it may be a case of you perceiving your more recent poetry as being bad.

I thought I wrote better when I was in full episode of bi-polar paranoia. It ended though, so has creativity. I've done drugs but never wrote on them. To me, everything seems better on pot, your fixing shit on meth and fucked out on acid.
I once told this blond chick to screw in a light bulb..

She got naked and asked "how do I get in it?"

No. They're not better at it. The just write more shite than most and occasionally something glitters in it. More often than not it's a tongue barbell.

I don't like anything I write. I'm not supposed to. I think all people are crazy, like I said elsewhere, probably the Sewer, monkeys are sane, people are insane monkeys.

Not even monkeys; but something bigger, like apes. But not even that. Or plants, or rocks.

When it comes to normal people, sane as it's planned out and maintained: I think they can write very good on commission. Better than the so-called abnormal people.

yea i think i am trying to find alot more subject matter to write about these days. i end up writing about waffles and bagels because im not pissed off about anything. nor i feel as if i have little to say when i get on the forum. as far as personal experience I don't know if my poems are actually better, or worse. i just know that they're not as edgy or whatever, and my grammar is still meh at best

Hemingway said "write drunk, edit sober". Perhaps when you're under the influence of substances or even in the middle of a bit of a psychotic episode, you will come up with interesting ideas but that definitely doesn't mean you're more creative, it just means that your creativity is altered.

There are plenty of examples, here and elsewhere, of people drink-posting -- it's not all that hard to tell Smile. There's often a poem in there somewhere but it takes a steady hand with the scalpel to draw it out. So sure, write whatever you like while you're on whatever you like -- but don't expect it to be instantly brilliant and don't assume that it makes you better than those who are neither insane nor inebriated.
It could be worse

I don't think crazy people are better, I think damaged people are better. I think their word play and descriptions are deeper than the average person's work.

Well, there was a study done that said drinking promoted creativity. But don't get fucked out hammered.

As a side note, I've been hanging out around my house naked for the past three days. So maybe you shouldn't trust me.
I'll be there in a minute.

news! what a glorious mental image! I think i should trust you in the blunt advise. I stand erected in principle that i should drink and write a poem. i like to be naked at my place too.
anyways,

.... i do love crazy poets

better at poetry than who?

it seems that since the pills have been settling in my poems have started to suck. anyone have similar problems. i have been deleting a few pieces

Everyone deletes a few pieces, sometimes.

I think it's a question of inspiriation. Try doing something that the sane people do, go out, have some fun/be at one with nature/get laid/read a book/cook a nice meal for someone/get someone to cook you a nice meal/buy a picture/poster...

That might not work, I make no guarentees.

We all go through phases and we're all a bit mad.

I wrote a poem under the influence of a migrain headache once and it worked after editing it many times after the aspirin, fiorinal, clonazepam, pseudofed, ibuprophen and some others kicked in.
