I have a technical quibble. Being very obtuse, it wasn't the recollections that kept you alive, it was whatever you recollected that did that. Perhaps replace that word with something more specific, more dynamic?

Lizzie, No you have it correct. What I can recall does not explain how I am still alive and of course those things I cannot recall, I cannot recall. This is somewhat similar to a Buddhist Koan, that is to say a puzzelment, a riddle, or a mind trap

The poem is five lines, technically the first line, the thesis,the reader availed himself of all the excesses of the 80's. The next two sections are composed of 2 lines each and can be seen as purposefully ambiguous, a pun or a double entendre, so that depending on how one chooses to read one of the two line, the other line changes as well.   Example:

" kept me from the ground
and breathing."

could be read as "and from breathing". Metaphorically meaning not being alive (spiritual dead), or the more obvious meaning since the speaker did not die, he continued to breathe. One might say that this is implied and begs the question and thus leads the reader to the first interpretation.
