Sleep
Work hard
make gravy, sure,
maybe some nice shirts
or a good stereo
But to crawl into bed
at night, without need
of an alarm clock,
well...

I like the simplicity. And the distinct change of tone, between the two stanzas.
"Work hard
make gravy, sure,
maybe some nice shirts
or a good stereo"
Is the narrator also making nice shirts and a good stereo?
"maybe get some nice shirts" would perhaps make a bit more sense?
Just a small thought.

great! simply great! and it is not simple at all

it is one of those poems that one cannot comment on because it is so perfectly worded. if i'd have my way, this would be the poem of the day.

A sweet poem. It reads like the lyrics to an obscure blues or rock song, and has that nice touch of modern urban angst about it which can make for great poetry. "Gravy", I assume, is a metaphor for money? (I sound like such a middle-class cracker...) Thanks for the read

Ah, I see, like how "dough" is slang for money in England. Cheers, trueenigma

i'd have liked to have seen this expanded, it's good as is, but there's so much you could do with it
