Apostrophilia

How misused the
apostrophe --
it’s never where
it’s meant to be

It shows up in
plurality
by twos and threes
annoyingly

Its ownership
to misconstrue
is sure, I’ll grant,
easy to do

It goes in where
a letter don’t
(I’ll not correct that
if you won’t!)

It makes a word
out of two others
or adds a letter
to another’s

Its proper use
is plain to see,
so do not fear
apostrophe

This feels like a schoolteacher's rhyme to help her students learn grammarSmile As someone who's always correcting apostrophes and being resented for it I enjoyed this a lot. I especially liked how in the fourth verse you excused the ungrammatical use of "don't" by calling attention to it in the next lines. I also like the title, which sounds like the diagnosis of a man who rubs his legs and grunts whenever an apostrophe's used correctly (I like to think he'd ruin his jeans after reading this comment...). A warm and funny poem; thank you for the readSmile

It's an old one actually Jack -- and I know this might come as a shock, but the reason I wrote it was because I kept seeing apostrophes misused and abused on an online poetry workshop of all places! Incredible, isn't it? Big Grin
