How did you begin writing?

What got you started writing? I know this has probably been done before.

No idea. I just always did.

I grew up reading a lot of poetry, especially Banjo Paterson -- I know I was writing ballads when I was 9 or so, so I'd imagine there were attempts before that Big Grin

Poetry had always been around, at home, mostly with rollicking good rhythms, Romantic or Victorian, and school also did this-- we ''did'' several Shakespeare plays, in the short time I was at proper school, and you would have to learn various speeches by heart. To that was added a couple of tales from Chaucer, all meter, meter, meter. Later, between 15-18, I studied French, Latin and English verse, and I think in that time, I started, and can still remember fragments. My brother took to calling me Shelley, and perhaps with good reason. I think I was more interested in being a great play-wright--and how! But the world was spared.....Smile

I started writing short stories and reading a lot (mostly Stephen King and Jane Austen) then in the 5th grade we had to create a folder with different forms of poetry and I stuck with it. I started getting away from writing stories and reading novels into strictly writing and reading poetry. Now I'm going back into stories, but poetry is still my passion.

I never thought of myself as someone who wrote. I lived in a crappy roommate situation. I have a poem about it, but in short, there were a number of addicts (heroin, crystal), a crazy dominatrix, a guy who lived in the garage knocking up multiple women, Mormons, pageant queens, a whole mix of crazy people. One of the roommates was a writer. He showed me some poetry he'd written, and turned me on to a lot of poetry. Something clicked. I read, and, read poetry that was nothing I'd been exposed to in school. I started writing, mostly badly, but enjoyed it and kept at it. I also have recently started writing fiction.

A couple old short stories (first attempts actually). I'm rewriting Ripples as a novel so I'd probably rather post that than go further with that one. I co uld put chapter one of that here. I also have another short story I wrote for a prompt.

I'll repost the novel chapter.

I've just started really, in the last few days.
I used to read religiously, I don't so much anymore.
I've been at university for the last 7 years and have largely avoided writing anything (maybe 5 or so essays in that time) as I studied design. too busy making pretty pictures.
I recently read a beautiful Buddhist poem called "guide to the Bodhisattva's way of life" which inspired me in a fairly significant way (hence the subject matter of the things I've written so far). I guess that was what got me interested.
My knowledge of poetry is minute, something I have to remedy for sure.
If something happens and you can remedy it, Why worry?
And if something happens that you can't remedy, Still why worry?

Randomly wrote something to impress a girl (total cliche, I know) and found out I have some talent to work with and a lot of poems later, here I am...

It started out as a love for reading. Then, the love evolved into a desire to create. After that, the desire mutated into a compulsion to write more, write better, and write even more still. It's like an addiction I can't get rid of.

Big thumbs up. I think that describes it pretty damn well.

Yeah, Brandon's comment could almost be the tagline for a writing site. That's the way it tends to go: read, create, compulsion, improve.

I don't know if you remember the days when you could not even read. I do.I went down to the shops of my village, and there were big letters (ads everywhere). I looked at them quite fascinated, knowing they must have meant somethin important. But just not yet to me.
Once I am a grown-up, I said to myself, I am gonna know all this shit, ha!
Well, yeah, eventually I did.
And was not too amused about it.
So I learned German by the letter. (and French and Russian too, bc of my parents).

Year by year, but anyway.

My first poem I ever wrote was pure pornography, meant to impress a sexy lady of 15? Ok, she was impressed.
Ok, that's how this mess all started
and I am sceptical, if it ever will come to a soft end.
Well, if not, I will take the rough end too.
