The Hobbyist
#1
I don't write poems to feed my soul,
connect with God,
or even confess anymore.
I've never truly confessed anyway.
Confession is when you tell the priest
that you've been cheating on your wife
with her brother. I just told a few wank stories,
violated my mum's privacy
and moaned about my dad,
like Plath without the ebullience.

I write poems because I like words,
watching them mate in their tanks,
taking notes. I'm a hobbyist, you might say,
like the girl who collects magazines,
or the man who goes hiking to hide from the shame
of having blown his brother-in-law.

Nice work bringing the brother-in-law back into it. I think the line that strikes me as most real (especially as it relates to confessional poetry is line 4): I've never truly confessed anyway.

That is usually the truth for a lot of people.

Nice read Jack.

I'm glad you liked that line, as I was trying to be honest when I wrote it. Thank you for your kind feedback, ToddSmile

after a few reads looking for something to say that needs work, i'm struggling....
is 'anyway' needed on L4?

i found it bright and open and it felt honest and truthful;
even if perhaps it wasn't, it had that authenticity
a good narrative poem should have. though i'm not sure plath
ever moaned about your dad Hysterical

it was short yet so full freshness.

great little read jack Smile

No, but she would have if he was her dadBig Grin Hell, she'd have moaned if Jesus himself was her daddy...
Thanks for the kind feedback, BilboSmile
