I was in the chemist's this morning and I happened to notice that they have a line of cosmetics called "Be Yourself". At first I thought it was quite funny, but the more I thought on it, the more indignant I became (because I have no life

).
What they're essentially saying to women is "be yourself, but yourself isn't actually good enough, so buy these products and give yourself a better face so that everyone knows you've put some effort into improving yourself".
Or is there some other possible interpretation?

I think you've hit the nail squarely on its coiffered head Leanne, there's whole industries from magazines to perfumes that make money out of that theme, frankly the situation is on the nose, cheers ;-)

The sad thing is, it was bad enough when they were just targeting women -- these days it seems every boy over 14 is primped and waxed and coiffed within an inch of his Calvin Klein-wearing life. Is there nowhere safe from spray tans and mousse?

if we all ourselves it would be on ugly world
i do agree that the particular phrase is a kick in the camel's toe for women.
they all (most products) say they'll improve you this way and that, that they'll give you a natural look.
apart from me we must all look natural. have you seen the crap on the faces of newscasters, it an effing larf i tell you. some look like they had the plasterers in.
