Children's Poetry
#1
Writing poetry for children is often scoffed at as being "easy" -- but when you consider that this is the first experience most children will have with poetry, it's a big responsibility to get it right.

What are your favourite children's poems? What makes a poem interesting and memorable for kids? And if we had a forum especially for children's poetry -- NOT a forum for children -- would you use it?

There are three that come to mind by C.J. Dennis, 'Hist!', 'Growing up' and 'The Circus' which I memorised and still get a kick out of reciting in my mind sometimes when I have trouble sleeping (second childhood is here 'Hip Hooray'). My grandson enjoys a bit of rhyme when he's in the mood, I reckon it's a great memory tool, not sure how it would go here, no harm giving it a go though, there's probably a lot of good stuff out there, Pam Ayres is a present day poet who is very good and extremely funny! Oh what a wicket web we weave!

Oh, C.J. Dennis is my very bestest most favourite in all the world! I love all those, plus "The Triantiwontigongolope" -- I'll put the others up in the reference section as well, as soon as I get a second.

My parents gave me a Pam Ayres cassette for my 10th birthday -- I still have it somewhere, though it's slightly well-used.

i'd probably use it ( i'd feel obligated) but i'd have no idea what to post.
i like the jabberwock which is a supposedly children's poem being in a children's story other than his i'm not that well up on kid's poetry. i came to poetry about 12 year ago. before that i must have caught glimpses of kid's stuff but if i did i can't remember the fact. nursery rhymes of course with the kids, and both my kids love reading, just not poetry Sad like i said, i never knew of it back in the day.
i also like the hunting of the snark.
