Love is Blind ( Villanelle)
#1
So, loyally, Sundays, I'm watching you
As you career round the pitch, like a fool
Believing that you’re one of Beckham's crew.

Sadly, you're not one of the favoured few
With armies of fans who think you are cool
So, loyally, Sundays, I'm watching you.

Sometimes you reveal small sparks (that is true).
Like a shining star. Head Boy in the school.
Believing that you’re one of Beckham's crew

But, are these sparks flukes? They're long over-due.
We both say nothing. It's our golden rule.
So, loyally, Sundays, I'm watching you.

On rainy days, and there are quite a few,
You'll find me cheering, like some love-sick fool
Believing that you’re one of Beckham's crew.

Being in love is what makes such things true
To me you're the biggest fish in the pool
So, loyally, Sundays, I'm watching you
Believing that you’re one of Beckham's crew.

(Villanelle - Five three line stanzaas and a final quatrain, possessing only two rhymes, repeating the first and third lines of the first stanza alternately in the following stanzas, and combining those two refrain lines into the final couplet in the quatrain....(can you tell I'm copying this?)

i absolutely love it jill. the pride is evident and the form is used well to convey the bond between adult and child.
and it's perfect for the poetry for fun forum. my grandkids are running around as i type and the noise hurts my eardrums Smile

Thank you, billy - how kind of you. (I thought after I'd posted that I'd had a senior moment and posted this before....seems not. Phew)

I actually intended it to represent young lovers (I can remember doing this when I first got to know my dear one - freezing cold Sunday mornings standing on the touch-line trying to seem interested!) but as you so rightly point out - it could just as easily be a proud Mum watching her 'two-left-feet' off-spring.
