Do you remember an Inn, Delilah?

Do you remember an Inn,
Delilah?
With apologies to Hilaire Belloc,

Do you remember an Inn,
Delilah?
Do you remember an Inn?
And the silk-sheets and sheep-skin
Of the beds that no-one sleeps in
Just waiting for the nightly queues.
And the wine from gallon jars
And the carousing and drug-sniffing
(In some secluded back-room bar)
Do you remember an Inn,
Delilah?
Do you remember an Inn?
And the carousing and drug-sniffing
Of the nouveau riche and nothings
Whose only interest is coke snorting?
And the rock music which makes an awful din?
And the haphazard progress
Of the clap
And hands that twitch and itch
Of the pros out nightly soliciting
Street walking
Dirty talking
Hugging shadows, lurking
In some ghastly travesty of life.
Highs and lows
As dismal music in the gutter flows
Do you remember an Inn,
Delilah?
Do you remember an Inn?

Never ending
Delilah,
Never ending
For the low trough whore
With customers at the door
No life
In the walls of the dingy halls
Just the beat of the feet
of the great undead and
yet unborn
Praying for a better morn.

Shame on you, Jill! Desecration! And respect, 'nuff said. I have to go out, but I have the image of people in the US, here, Canada, and Oz, pencilling out their own versions. Big Grin

Hmm...maybe not, though. You don't suppose I have forgotten, do you? I just ruminate rather slowly. Wink

Come now, the progress of the clap is never haphazard, it's clearly traceable from skank to self-titled stud Big Grin

This is a most unpleasant picture, grannyjill -- and very well drawn.

I have led a very sheltered life - may I admit I don't really know what 'the clap' is!

Thank you - You say this is a keeper. I like it myself - but, what do you do with your poems? Once you've shown them to others on sites like this, they go into computer file, or a real-life file and there they stay. There isn't much else you can do with them. I only know a handful of people who might (with a bit of push from me) read a bit of poetry.......all my immediate family and extended family and my friends do not fit into that group!

I believe the clap was originally gonorrhoea... now it's a generic term for things people acquire in delicate places while they're doing things they ought not be doing Smile

As for what to do with your poems... well, you can sell them on to people who don't appreciate them but are happy to make money out of them anyway, or you can make a lovely little chapbook for posterity that your children and grandchildren will cherish.

I could do the latter thing, but if they're not interested now...I suspect it would get thrown out with all the other stuff when I die. (just being realistic)
