1
Season of chesty coughs and high temperatures
tap-running noses and bone-aching flu.
As I lie moaning quietly upstairs in bed
at least I've a colourful tree-top view
2
Autumn is full of itself – over-acting like mad.
Like Eric the Viking it rampages and roars
through village and town, trampling out
the vintage where the grapes of wrath are stored.
(oops, sorry that's some other verse)
3
Leaves in the guttering, not another duty,
searching for a ladder in a spider-webbed shed.
Attempting a death-defying climb
fearful of falling and landing on my head
4
(There's a ball of fire fixed in the heavens above)
Driving in fog, blinded by low-lying sun
Sun-visor's useless and pedestrians scatter
Not sure of my score. I've hit at least one.
5
Bombarded by giant marrows
my horizon narrows to kitchen-filled days
of trying to take them
and make them
taste like something other than water-filled skins.
6
Leaf-layered pathways, memories of child-hood.
Onomatopoeic - crunchy then sludgy, and slippery.
Annual visit to A and E. Waiting for hours
(with dislocated limb) and promise of flowers.
7
Needing to rise half an hour early
to defrost the car and de-ice the locks
(nature the cake-decorator's been round again).
Pleas to Lethe for just one last moment.
Surely she'll let me linger longer in bed
Woeful images of being closeted in an office
and thoughts of rebellion are loud in my head.
All these mean Autumn to me
not mellow fruitfulness,
not being the mate of an ageing sun.
Hope you enjoyed sharing my moments
What's Autumn like where you are from?
