So, I'm thinking on trying out two different schools of poetry (imagist and confessional--I'll add more later):

So for imagist I'm thinking HD, WCw, ?

What are the main works that I should study?

Confessional: I feel a little better on what I should read.

I'm thinking Snodgrass (Heart's Needle), Lowell (Life Studies), Plath (Bell Jar, or Ariel I'm guessing), Sexton (?), John Berryman (?)

Who or what works am I missing?

I was trying to classify by school one of my favorite poets (Louise Gluck). Her early work struck me as confessional. Her later work was tougher to classify it felt slightly imagist. So, I thought maybe go back to the roots and study both schools. I mean you've got to keep studying something.

That was a bit long-winded but I would appreciate any direction.

Thanks

Confessional poetry makes me break out in hives, so I'm no help there at all Smile

Actually, imagism does similar things to me... I can stomach a bit of Pound, a bit of HD, but too much and I overdose on modifiers.

I may come to the same conclusions Smile but I figured I'd do the bigger movements before I moved to the esoteric like Deep Image ( The name always strikes me as unfortunate kind of an artsy-porn sense to it).

It's funny... imagism does nothing for me, but symbolism makes me crazy happy Smile Give me Baudelaire or Rimbaud any day. I couldn't even tell you why, since the two styles are so closely related (especially where Pound is concerned)... it might be that symbolism just has that little extra step into esotericism but always with a key, so it's never completely obscure. Imagism tends a little further toward the personal, and seems to be a little more closed to me.

Well, I'll try not to give you hives if I begin trying things out. I'll have to reread Baudelaire I remember liking him, but I wasn't prepared to appreciate him. I'll definitely study symbolism eventually.

My wife looks at the red wheel barrow poem and throws up in her mouth. So, perhaps I just want to stir up things.

Yeah she says not a poem. I'm suspending judgment. Sometimes imagism works for me sometimes not.

We'll I'm starting to drop off.
