nuclear power stations:

i've always been an advocate of solar, wind, and other alternative energies. i think if enough funding was put into them as a whole it would make a huge difference. wind is almost limitless in certain places so they're a good thing, as is wave power. the sun could be used during daylight times to power homes etc, charging long life batteries which in turn would do the home electrics in the dark periods.

there are lots of solar farms being built now that power turbines from heating water etc, the thing comes down to money. solar and wind and probably all the other alternate energy systems have a long wait for good returns, where as the stations already up and running and polluting are making a large profit already.
existing power suppliers are slow to fund the alternate energies because it takes profits from them in the long run. they'll also lobby against designated sites etc for the same reason.

personally i'm all for it in the long term. short term we have to use existing stations

just a quick edit;

i think we also need to work on a long life battery system that is relatively harmless to the environment when destroyed.

You know I think the issue is the grid itself and our perception that we need hundreds of volts and amps being pumped in to our homes, really we dont, you can power all your lighting and most household appliances from 12/24 volt's already and the technology to store and generate 12/24 volt's is already with us, you can easily step up the 12/24 volts to 110/230 for the things that need it, homes can be powered as caravans/boats and we could really scrap the grid now for domestic purposes cause 12/24 volt solar panels and wind turbines and leisure batteries just aren't that expensive.

if all new built homes were mandated to use solar power for general running and for charging up batteries during the day which they can already do.
and grants were given to do the same on existing homes the grid would only be used for industry in less than a decade. personally i'd like to see more eco friendly batteries used instead of the old lead based ones and the lithium ones they use in cars.
