Write a poem for National Poetry Month based on the topic described....rather, write a poem set in, pertaining to, or inspired by the given region, whether its entirety or just some part of it, as this year's prompts are going to be unified by the theme "Around the World" like last year's prompts were unified by the theme "Esoterica". Each poem should appear as a separate reply to this thread. There are three levels of participation:

Bronze. Participated at least once.

Silver. Participated every day.

Gold. Participated every day, with all entries either being the same form (e.g., every one a sonnet) or being distinct forms (e.g., no two haiku).

Today's region is Polynesia, including Hawaii, Easter Island, Salas y Gomez, and New Zealand.

Three Els

Realtors have a rule of three els to size up
houses and the property appertaining:
briefly it’s location and then location
followed by, well you

get the picture.  Looking at Polynesia,
it’s located well on the globe, Pacific
Ocean waters, but for Hawaii also
crossroads that ships and

planes demand: commercially solid.  As to
final, detailed point of location on the
islands choose a beachcomber’s spot reserved at
Waikiki Beach.

Coup de Grâce

The island shaking and the great stone heads
toppling proved a herald of the merchants
of bodies who with their guns and chains would steal

at first the children then at last the chiefs.
All those they left---the very final keepers
of memory for the people---they would further

decimate with disease and with what famine
losing so many hands to blistered skin
or bloody sputum brought, so by the time

the merchants of comfort with their starched white collars
and pearlescent prayer beads arrived, the writing
inscribed on wooden tablets was obscure,

the meaning behind what tattoos the elders wore
had grown arcane, the statues of wood in their homes
were honored less and less: whatever faith

the people had once possessed was overthrown,
whatever religion they had was now mere culture,
whatever prohibitions were impressed
by their new masters were just a coup de grâce.
