The signs in Aokigahara
Your life is precious, say the signs
in seven different languages
or Please talk to the police.
uninterrupted by the cheerful
chirp of birds
or the shushing sounds
of smaller mammals
scurrying through the undergrowth
people travel deep
to where the whispering stops
and listen to the trees.
Aspens know that life's a gift
and not to talk to the police
or interrupt people just looking
for a quiet place to die.

thanks ella - just went back and edited out the quotation marks and replaced them with italics because I hated the aesthetics of the quotes. Going to leave it like this for a bit and see how I feel about it

For what it's worth, I've had the quotation mark/italic dilemma come up a few times in my own pieces. In almost every case italics won out. Sometimes against members objections. Italics are far more aesthetically pleasing, and quotes, at least for this reader, are implied. Stick with the italics IMO.

Yah, I agree and usually make the same decision, there is one poem I wrote about 2 people talking while knitting that I ended up leaving them in I think.
