All of Us Awake

My roommates drug use
shifted from loading
bowls or bongs
to the nutritional equivalent
of lunchables,
dirty rails of dull yellow,
sometimes cut pink
with baby laxative.

No one worried
about going to sleep
they would find me
in the walk-in closet
drag me downstairs
to the girl in frayed fishnets
who matched me wine cooler
for tequila shot.

Morning arrived,
no one remembered
how the night ended.

Exalteration

It steals critical faculties and leaves–
shorn of obnoxious, hard realities–
at most immunity to dentists’ pains,
unconsciousness some ways from final death.

In calculated doses it exalts
and leads its user to see Heaven lit
with welcome or some less religious Truth
if one’s normal perceptions tend that way.

At minimum it earns its common name
of “laughing gas” but leaves us wondering
if giggles under “whippit” influence
were witty when one’s wits were wandering.

Use a Drug of Any Thing

I don't exist,
like a child doesn't exist in society.
Most people believe that they exist.
I don't have a belief;
I simply share others' beliefs that they exist.
Like a hermit, I practice practical skills and make poems
no matter where I am and who I'm with.
