The Science of Love

"We tend to love as did our mother
Cloth or wire or any other" - poem fragment by Dr. Harry Harlow

I find it bleakly amusing that Doctor Harlow was so shit at life,
and I don't mean the technicals,
the paying of bills
and changing lightbulbs,
but distinguishing love in a sorrowful world,
when feelings are what drove his science,
torturing primates to reveal love's kernel,
inside its apple
of empty gestures.

the wire mother with the black button eyes
stares back at me in my daydreams,
telling me nothing, like a grim pagan mask,
demented old shrew pulling faces.

and as the monkey trembles
in his hanging cage, like a parrot
on a merchant's stall,
I see Harlow's face, cold and studious, not warm enough
to be sadistic, or betray any pleasures at all,
patiently expecting the snap,
the moment when life surrenders meaning,
and the knower retreats inside himself.

Fantastic. This may very well be my favorite one of yours Jack. It was a great opening and it just rolls from there, each line a gem("torturing primates to reveal love's kernel //inside its apple // of empty gestures" may be one of the saddest picturesque things I've ever read).

Thank you for sharing this. And thank you for sharing that great reading! Smile
PS. If you can, try your hand at giving some of the others a bit of feedback. If you already have, thanks, can you do some more?

Wow, thanks Addy! That's a huge compliment. Harlow, like all famous men and women whose unhappiness manifests itself strangely in both their personal and professional lives, fascinates me. Glad you liked the reading as wellSmile I swear I'm bringing back gray jumpers and crocodile beaniesHysterical

i was amazed how well you read the first line, (the shit word hehe) it was perfect as was everything else.
you need to get out on the open mic circuit. you'd do really well.

like addy it has also become my favorite not just of yours but of all the poems i've had the pleasure of. Apart from a couple of classics.

please do a ten or more and i'll open an open mic forum, and you can invite some from the dup forums over (a sort of 2nd venue Wink )

Thanks Billy! I'm so pleased you like this that much! Also delighted you liked how I swore. I tried to say it non-chalantly, which I find very difficult when swearing. I have a few more readings which I'll attach to their appropriate poems right now.

great, just make sure you place them in this forum. (do as many as you wish jack, it gives the sight an added bit of umph.)
if it's okay i'll only be leaving short comments here and full feedback on the written word part over in their respective forums.
