I am tired of poems that show, not sing
like a lyrebird or take to wing
like an eagle. Poems aren’t meant to show
the careworn furrows on an aged brow,
they’re meant to crow.
I am tired of poems that paint a scene.
Did Homer in his wide demesne
wield paint and brushes, sculpt a frieze?
The horns of war, the tambourine -
his verse was sung to all of these.
