The Beatles Are Shit

The Beatles are shit
and so is anyone who likes them.

The Beatles are shit
The Rolling Stones are shit, too

The Who, Led Zeppelin, The Sex Pistols,
Pink Floyd, Bob Dylan, Tom Waits, Nirvana...
all dog shit.*

*sing this to "I want you (she's so heavy)"

Misery Loves Company

Lucy’s in the sky with diamonds,
While I’m stuck on the ground with rocks.
She stands high
On her pedestal of gold,
While I stand low in tattered socks.

A weightless float—
With the wind, she dances,
All with privileged
Circumstances.

It takes every part of me
Not to grasp these stones
And set them free—
Aimed at the target on her back.

With one swift and sudden crack,
It all would quickly crumble.
She could join me in this dirty rubble,
And we’d polish these rocks together,
Bound in the same miserable stupor.

A fourth grade classroom
in 1987…

Lloyd:

Like a star creature creation,
Like a blunt rolled fat,
Like a man out of time.

He sat behind me
I, who wished to be
the teacher’s pet.

She smiled right over
my shoulder at him.
With his natural hair
and his polyester shirts
with the butterfly collars.

“Lucy in the sky of diamonds,
Lucy in the sky of diamonds.”

He’d sing it over and over
Like a flat tire but with soul
like a party gone off the rails
like a disco king stranded.

I hope he’s still out there.

The Beatles are gods.
More so than the Smiths.
The Smiths are the pits,
all covered in zits
that workmanlike tits
pick in their business of pecking.

Lennon was the OG,
the acai and Goji
berry. More so than Chuck.
Or that hillbilly
who drove a truck.

All You Need

Such a simple song
a pleasing sentiment–
“All you need is love!”
But like the finest cocktail
sweet mixed drink for the soul
its bitters linger:

Mid-deep romantic sentiment;
major assurance chorus;
instrumental laughing at the chorus.
More sentiment;
more chorus;
more derisive laughter.
Reinforce chorus;
orchestral elaboration;
final, faint self-reference
 to an older hit
  ending in a minor key.

Ambivalence: it’s oh, so serious
 grandiose (as the Marseillaise)!
 And laughs so hard at love
 perhaps it means to laugh with lovers

but at the very end admits
that like all songs
each love must end in one or more
 of ennui
 alienation
 or death.

Turn on your phone
Get jazzed and run up stairs
It is not sleeping

Pick up your head
And fight back against the substance
It is dampening

That you won't hear
The nonsense all around
It is nothing
Peanut butter honey banana sandwiches

The band began by singing
petty grandes chansons courtoises
but as they grew, so too the length
of all the words they used.

From "You think you've lost your love
but it's you she's thinking of"
to "My independence seems
to vanish in the haze",

past the decade's midpoint, we believed
that they would soon compose
another Leaves of Grass or Lyrical Ballads
or even a Book of Common Prayer

for those whose faith was symbolized
by "All you need is love"
but then Paul discovered Linda,
but then John got back his mum,

and in the end, all we were left
was Let It Be and George.

A varied lot on this one.

@SwooK - interesting use of repetition.  Are the Beetles first among equals, or only mentioned first on account of the assignment?  Watching the critic at work...

@carahmellow and @Valerie Please - nice compare-and-contrast opportunity here with both choosing the same song.  Occasional rhyme and a tragic story line in one,  a deft triangle of crushes in the other - still unresolved.  Both good.

@busker - another critique or comparison, but with more praise.  A catalog, cross-reference, pantheon.

@CRNDLSM - how it sounds from inside the headphones of the beast.  Good and involving.

@RiverNotch - sort of a rave's progress.  The audio wallpaper of our extended adolescence.

Guitars

Now I have two
more, passed on
by my brothers.

No one saved
that Silvertone
with the lipstick

tube pickup;
case that doubled
as an amp.

They disappeared
long before
‘The End.’
