Hazel Motes

Where you come from is gone, where you thought you were going to never was there, and where you are is no good unless you can get away from it.
Flannery O’Connor, Wiseblood

I knew the truth
when Hazel Motes led the way
in his broke down Chevrolet
around those Georgia hills
into downtown Macon where he preached
from the top of his hood
The Church of Christ without Christ.
No greater glory have I seen
in one man alone
than his passion, his stations of the cross,
just another crazy man
loosed from his home without destiny
a parable of one who follows his misplaced life
to its always apocalyptic end
determined to take God along.

Hey TqB,
Another good one.  had to do my research.  My only suggestion(s) would be to make 'truth' the subject of the first line and remove 'I' in the middle and maybe cut 'always'.
yeah, that's it.  Well, there might be more changes around my suggestions, but I'll leave that to you.

Hi Bryn,
Thanks for the read and the notes.  I was hoping there was enough on the page to give a complete portrait of Hazel Motes, e.g. without research, so I've got more work to do.
However I don't mind leading folks to Wiseblood.  This is based more on the experience of viewing John Huston's film version of the story though I've read the novel (after I saw the film).

My comment on research was more about me than the poem.  I definitely got the image of Hazel's life, just never heard of him and figured there might be something to look up.  Love the last line, by the way.
