Cancelled Names

There shall not be another hurricane
named Ian or Fiona, I have read,
that neither may be suffered to remain
as harbingers of doom that we must dread.

Does someone in authority believe
that there will never be another storm
or that their superstition will deceive
God’s weather like a prayer in modern form?

Or is this scientific vanity,
a pride which prances on without contrition–
an ignorance and rote insanity
that loudly masquerade as definition?

A concept I've never considered, and am glad to take a moment on. Hurricanes are pretty scary, I wonder if Harvey will be cancelled, or Trump on a different note.

Is this poem a metaphor for law enforcement? Presidents? People in power? Interestingly enough I found that way (whichever for that matter) no nits.
