Idle questions about the writing life
#1
How often do you write?
When do you write (any old time or a special time)?
Do you start with some words or an idea?
Do you have a ritual before writing?
Where do you write and what do you write on?
How much time do you spend on a poem?
And anything else?
Is it annoying to be asked these questions?

How often do you write? not often enough
When do you write (any old time or a special time)? I prefer the very early morning
Do you start with some words or an idea? yes- preferably ideas take form from what I see/hear/experience
Do you have a ritual before writing? no
Where do you write and what do you write on? usually at home, and usually on the computer
How much time do you spend on a poem? 10 minutes to 10 years. Sometimes I ditch em pretty quickly, other times they never feel done.
And anything else? of course
Is it annoying to be asked these questions? I ask them of myself, so, no.

I've lost poems, but never thrown any away, at least not since my 20s.  I've been going through what I've written since joining the forum and printing out the ones that seem worth saving.  It's a small percentage.

And anything else? of course

When do you write (any old time or a special time)? Morning or afternoon, seldom evening or at night.
Do you start with some words or an idea? Idea, usually, but sometimes an opening line or two.
Do you have a ritual before writing? No.
Where do you write and what do you write on? At home, ideas on scraps of paper, to completion on PC (WordPerfect™)
How much time do you spend on a poem? 5-30mins initially, hours in revision if it seems worth it.
And anything else? I'll sometimes have 3 ideas in a morning ride, then nothing for weeks.  The trick is remembering the ideas.
Is it annoying to be asked these questions? No.

I write whenever I have the impulse, which is after work, or during.

I have a concept in mind, but the subject can go in a different direction.

Rituals are a good habit. Right now, I don't have any.

Different environments yield different results.
I often write in my room, I'd rather outside.

I write from passing thoughts, and struggle with more focused subjects.

I have little patience for making art
once I've finished, I need time away from my piece to be able to appreciate it.

Why do you make poetry? I write out of necessity.
It means very little to me afterward.

Straightforward questions help me reflect.
Depending on my mood, open ended questions can be just as irritating.

I write at night, if I’m in the mood for it.
Sometimes, I’m lucky and a line comes to me while walking the dog or during a similar mundane activity
I most strongly feel the urge when I’m trying to a evade a deadline. Writing is procrastinating.

These days, almost always write at night lying on the bed, typing out lines on my iPhone. If I’m in a particularly creative phase, I can finish a poem in one sitting without any major revision. Otherwise, I write a couple of lines that lead nowhere, give it up and start to scroll through my social media feed, then pick things up another night

In the past, I’ve written at cafes in a strange city. But i was going through a more productive phase then

When do you write (any old time or a special time)?  Like morning the best
Do you start with some words or an idea?  Usually an idea with some words that I mull over in my head for awhile.  Lately trying to zero in on a specific idea behind poem otherwise I tend to get stuck or the poem looses focus from trying to fit in too much.
Do you have a ritual before writing?  no
Where do you write and what do you write on?   I write any old place, usually start in a notebook until I get a rough skeleton then on computer
How much time do you spend on a poem?           I've been spending more time on each poem as time goes by
And anything else?

Average five songs per year, then napm and lpia

When do you write (any old time or a special time)?
It stays in my head until I can't hold it anymore, it's in a pressure cooker.

Do you start with some words or an idea?
I like big pictures then I'll see where words fit like a puzzle

Do you have a ritual before writing?
Before shows I usually make a sharpie t-shirt, and eat pineapple peanut butter sandwiches, pee and poo a whole lot, sometimes drink a bit, writing no rituals though it's spontaneous

Where do you write and what do you write on?
My phone on a couch or bed, sometimes at work on a break, if I really don't want to forget it.

How much time do you spend on a poem?
Napm...  Sometimes months

And anything else?
Sometimes I play Lego games to 100% completion, my employees bought me a microphone for Christmas to record on my computer instead of my phone.  I'm about to close on my house and come into a large sum of money and may build a soundproof studio in the new house.
