Press of Sail

See fine quadrangular web
woven between road-sign stanchions
gleaming wire-frame vision
of a square-rigged sail
made real, and billowing
in a stiff south wind.

Conceive its weaver’s efforts,
and their effect: a tiny push
to north, earth rolling
just that bit against its axis.
At which our spider-skipper growls,
Butterfly got nothin’ on me.”
