Justice

They got her mixed up with strength,
with power, when she crossed
the sea of reeds, when she climbed
Mount Sinai. They wanted punishment,
they wanted all the evil ones
erased, but with her dark red hair
and her brilliant blue eyes
she was more exacting. With her sword,
she cut down everyone. With her scales,
she weighed their flesh.

There were 8 of us kids -
7 boys and our sister.
She was 2nd oldest and always
in command. Of all the crazy
shit we did, she’d always
threaten, but never tell dad.
Like the time my brother
stepped on a nail in a 2x4 -
she calmly pulled his foot off,
then cleaned it.  When my dad
asked why he was limping,
nobody seemed to know.
And nobody told.

I wish I could pull a nail
out of my sister’s coffin-
bring her back somehow.

Let X equal the loneliness,
let Y equal the running of the deer,
divided, night falls,
multiplied, dawn seeks solace,
subtracted, morning breaks down,
added, fog in the river bottom.
The mathematics of existence
burns away the fog, but solitude
flows endless as the river
until numbered hours collide.

When my ex was eight years old,
the foster system saved her
from rat infested bedrooms.
Her new parents would pass out
and leave the door wide open
for strangers to have their ways
until she would turn sixteen.
I left her, after her third attempt to kill me.

Envious Eight

Eight grumbles, sees herself
unjustly bypassed.  She is
after all a Power of Two
and the numeral of famous kings...
She’s binary - octal - why
those wretched humans chose
ten for their system’s cipher
just because they, lacking vision
had to count on fingers– you know
Mickey Mouse thrives with just eight!
