Beans and Toast
Roasted beans atop toast.
a specialty during these hard times.
Somehow, I circled the sun,
barely leaving the trailer.
Value, worth, progress,
a formulaic reflection of
Sounds, places, things, people.
Though this year I smiled the most
in the trailer.
Eating beans and toast.
Atop of a desk.
The screens monitor.
Songs made,
places seen,
people met.
It overheated,
as if the popping pintos
microwaved atop toast.
Illuminations, reflection.
Epiphanies, ghosts one carries
of a person past-tense.
Apparitions of goodness
Manifests in living well.
Though some skeletons,
should be left in the past.
Though the eternal testimonial,
an interpersonal reality,
regardless of the achievements
I have grossed.
Damn, I love beans and toast.

This is delightful. Personally, I favor chili on toast with a very cheap Merlot on the side, but what a sparkling commentary on the Year That Wasn't. Or at least we wish it had never.

Growing up with English parents who were both working, beans on toast was a staple for me. But it was always called "beans on toast". So for me, "beans and toast" or "beans atop toast" both sound very strange. Other than that, I have no qualms.
If dad was home we might get poached eggs on toast. Another go to.

So good, loved poached eggs.
That is good to know about the beans on toast being a standard usage in England.
Unfortunately I live in Montana, where the English language is loosely applied haha.
Thanks for the feedback!

Brilliant, Bunx. I'm another fan of beans on toast. Also cheese on toast and scrambled eggs on toast. I like 'atop'; it elevates. I find 'beans and toast' intriguing; it sounds like they're mixed up, perhaps in a bowl.
You've posted in Miscellaneous, so I'm just going to enjoy this, unless you'd like a few suggestions (very minor). It's a great poem; thanks!
All best,
Leaf

Thank you Leaf, go for those suggestions! Scrambled eggs on toast is a classic always. My staple lunch in Highschool. I feel like mixing eggs, chili, and toast in a bowl, an idea I will make a reality.
Glad you liked it!!

I feel like the stanzas I crossed out don't add much or need to be more concrete.
Beans on toast is a alien dish to me, mundanely exotic and repellent at the same time, so I really enjoyed exploring this poem.

I think 'Songs made' etc. refers to what the screens are monitoring, but I could be wrong (often am)

Monitors refer to a computer. I feel like there is a better way to phase that idea.
It being a way too look back at songs recorded, your friends, and the places you've traveled.
Tranquility- I hope that answer your question, The analogy in the 9th stanza refers to when your honoring a good part of you past-self or maybe a memory of someone you remember having good traits, you honor them by living well. I guess you could add themselves in there but I want it to be more open to interpretation.
Also if you like Alien Dishes you should check out my super old poem called Psychideli. Pretty much about Alien Dishes.
Thanks for the input ya'll

Sorry I misunderstood that, Bunx. But I like the notion of a monitor monitoring. By the way, do you ever use a sandwich toaster? My bros and I use them to make mini-pizzas sometimes

You're welcome, Bunx. Sandwich toasters rule. We do toast desserts too, using chocolate spread, jam, or honey, or even marmalade if someone's in Paddington Bear mode, lol.
