Ovinaphobia
You think I carry summer in my blood
when I don’t use a sweater,
when the wind chills and the trees are bare.
You wonder why I drink coffee
in the evening till I resonate
with the stars, never noticing
that I’m too afraid to close my eyes.
You believe I’m an atheist
when I refuse to go to church
to meet Jesus, the Lamb
of God, who takes away the world’s sin.
The secret of poetry is cruelty.--Jon Anderson

Lock up your monsters
Trimontagog lived
in a cave under the cliff
at Sandy Bay.
You could hear him
sometimes: a clatter and grumble
like rocks churned, a rusty taste
of anger, seeping cold -
we were happy to stay away.
Our father named him
for something he’d seen in Syria
during the war
but deep down we all knew
he was our taniwha.

Haunted
Forbidding Gothic facades led into
a labyrinth of torture, madness, grief,
where bricks and stones oozed screams, and you
can hear them still when surf attacks the reef
at Seacliff, where they locked up Janet Frame,
sedated her for being diff’rent, took
electric pulses dancing through her brain
like rearranging pages in a book.
Her fame had spread in time to halt the op.
‘Lobotomy’ was just the latest craze,
‘Unsexing’ where they sterilized, had stopped
so ECT led patients to the maze.
We’re all so scared of going mad, yet fools
we must be, just to live here. That’s the rules.

I've seen domestic dogs rip through human flesh.
Split seconds to lose inches of arm.
Domestic friendly dogs.
I've seen dogs who grew up together, sleep together,
snap with only one left alive by morning.
I can handle these dogs.
I've walked hundreds of miles in the middle of night
alone. Nothing scares me like an attack
from a pack of wild dogs.

CRNDL - your signature read as the last line of your poem. Often does, for me. Adds that surrealistic turn-around.

Accidental Silence
It's a tick
tock - a void inside the clock
It's a creak
crack - a jilt outside my door
It's a drip
drop - a mess upon the floor
It's a ba
bump - an echo lined in chaulk

the clean air
I am so afraid to come to NZ
what if these twins who help
inhale and exhale
nostrils, lungs
get used to being lazy
and coming back from there
when they have to work overtime
what then?

New Zealand’s Magic
Hazes on horizons,
stranded in the sea,
far from mainland gazes,
haunted hotels, tunnels, hills, and bays,
boys without faces, eyeless men,
the clanking soldiers of Selwyn Street,
visitors, voices in the walls,
strange lights in the skies,
up and down the island
spirits, beasts, and aliens
cast their shadows
with the mountain fairy tribes,
Patupaiarehe.
