If this is offensive,
I'm sorry. But this thread started sad and ended up making me laugh. I don't think it's vain to complain about Valentine's Day. We all have experiences with love that flood back on that day.

It is not vanity
that compels my complaints
but rather repulsion

Not starting a new topic for this, but

Valentine's Day

The grocery store holds court
for desperate men waiting
to show love and deliver death
with decaying roses and processed pigs.

Yes. Showing love by delivering death.

I never understood why people pay good money for flowers that will die the next day. And then the recipient has to find a vase, cut the stems on a diagonal, put the plant food in the water, arrange the flowers, place it somewhere the kids/cat won't eat it/break it....

How about giving a card with the flowers that says: "I gave you more pointless work to do so I could show how much I love you, in a very generic and unimaginative way. Can we have sex now?"

fun fact: I was at a grocery story today waiting for my brother to get roses, and saw five people walk out with roses... nothing says fucks given like a bottle of milk, a loaf of bread, and "ah, fuck it's valentine's day" check out line roses.

That said, without the roses there will not be fucks given, so bet on the roses. But why not grab a seven dollar bottle of wine while you're at it?

Also, i feel like my pome would be infinitely better with a condom reference... but can't quite get it to fit....

Why not skip the flowers? Instead tell your woman she's beautiful, smack her on the tush and go down south for two hours. If you really want the day to be special, that is....

You Bring Flowers

Yay, an opportunity
to choose a vase,
one that allows these stems
to tilt and fall like fans
or maybe pick-up sticks;

one that will catch
the light on the windowsill
or that doubles in shadows
against the pine wall
or projects its blue glow
onto the photo frames.

I watch the petals change
all week until they are dust.
They leave only their image
and the warmth of you knowing
they'd please me; nothing left to dust.

This was such a dark cynical view of people casually walking into the store to pick up flowers...It gave me a horribly pessimistic reminder that the gift of dead plants is an accurate representation of mourning and regret. I was shocked, it got dark quickly and I loved it.
