By my hand I raised you that you would stay by me.
We learned, each through the other, trust and loyalty.
Never needing threat or force we understood that faith
lay in a brown-eyed passive stare but now an empty space
is where you lay a'dreaming of every woodland chase;
but by my side, I make believe, you walk and understand
that though you sleep forever, peace was granted...by my hand.

Hi. I have to admit, this poem brought a tear to my eye. It says so much in a few lines. There's a symmetry to it. It ends as it begins. Some poems you only want to read once. This isn't one of them. Thanks for the read, and re-reads :-) Grace

A beautiful tribute and testament to your love. Sorry tectak, Best Loretta Thanks loretta,
we knew she would probably not make it through our two weeks in Scotland but her final days were dog heaven on earth...the reference to being in a bad place earlier was only my location. I have to believe she knew we were going to help her.

Your words ring of the beauty of relationship between humans and dogs; which is too short and heart wrenching to end.
Dogs show us, without words, love and trust; as you perceive; I'm sure he knew you were there for him. Best Loretta
Tectac,
This was beautiful.
I was moved by this.
The ending holds deep meaning for me:
" I make believe, you walk and understand
that though you sleep forever, peace was granted...by my hand.
Sorry for your loss.

2005-2015 That tapped into my empathy knowing that I had to do the same thing once. The words seem so gentle in this almost like your laying down. It says volumes in just a few words.

Dear Tom-
I suspect that you will never be able to read this poem aloud.
The rhymes are just spot on, and I am sure that you took great care to get this one right. Any further comment would seem downright cruel.
Every year older that my dog gets, I feel a gnawing dread that can't be spoken. I should have known better than to have another dog in my life. In my heart.
Even after almost 30 years I still think almost daily of old Buck, a pure black shepherd with only a white "tie" on his chest. My bother refuses to talk about him, but I praise Bucky often. He has assumed legendary status. He gained his independence on the 4th of July. I still see the smile on face, comforting us silly humans til the very end. Damnit, now I'm gonna cry again... How do dogs do this to us?
Sorry doesn't say it, brother. May good memories bring you comfort.
... Mark
