At 20, Tucker had a job bagging groceries;
another thing he did was carry food stuffs and drinks
over his grandma's house where Wayne and Josh 'n'm stayed.
He would bring back home things his grandma sent.
"Be careful what you do with that bread"
she would say.
When Desiree had her first case of Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever,
what the doctors would say you only have once
if you get it,
she took to Tucker's advice about getting close enough
to the heater to let it burn enough so it'll feel
like it's scratching you for you.
He told her about that, and the way he did those times,
in the shower,
when Bobby and him got lice,
and he'd scald his head till he could smell
burning flesh. And it wouldn't itch for a while.
Desiree hated hot baths.
"Dirg, with all this time I got to be sitting here."
That's what Tucker said when he had a girl talking to him
for a while after he got that first job.
The first time in a long time, he had time for the two of them
just to talk. She said she wasn't feeling well,
she'd call him back; and he ended up just sitting there,
nobody else was even around to bother him now.
They broke up after that;
and it turns out too, Desiree didn't have what they said she had
the first time,
but it was something else.
Next thing you know, Bobby's down with the so-called
Kissing Disease.
Of course the Bobbo's girlfriend's mama made her break up
with him.
Then he sat around his room for nights,
scratching decent stuff in notebooks, writing things,
and what he called "tearing it up on my own time."
He had to go the doctor for that Kissing Disease too,
Tucker had to help them pay for it.
If there was anything to explain all this,
it was that they were getting older.
