internet kill switch
#1
will it happen?

President Obama will be given the power to shut down the Internet with a 'kill switch' in a new law being proposed in the US.

He would be able to order popular search engines such a Google and Yahoo to suspend access their websites in times of national emergency.

Intriguing. I can see the practicality of giving homeland security some kind of limited jurisdiction over the kinds of security measures internet powerhouses like Yahoo or Google employ.

I think it could happen, but it'll be one of those things that'll most likely never be used, like a presidential command to launch a nuclear bomb.
PS. If you can, try your hand at giving some of the others a bit of feedback. If you already have, thanks, can you do some more?

Heh, I only knew it was a matter of time before Obama was given the authority to preform actions such as this.

The United States government wishes to control the people and what they can access. A lot of this is thanks to wikileaks releasing much info that the united states not wanting released.

BTW, this will only affect citizens of the United States if you read the full article. google.co.uk is on a whole different registation system compared to the US.

This website, muckypig.com is ran/based in the United States, what happens their will affect this site.

No, the UN does, all ARPA addresses are ran though them (Origionally created by ARPANET and then the States, now multi-national, thus, making it harder to control without causing conflict, eg. wikileaks, Thepiratebay, etc.), then registered by the country.

it's about an internet kill switch, not what country allows what apps lol

lets get back on topic.

the gist of it is this i think moobs.

they're using cyber terrorism as an excuse to create a cut off switch or patch that can enable the usa president to give a go ahead, to disconnect america from the rest of the world during such a strike. in order to save the banking, gov records. strategic planning etc.the cyber attacks during war makes sense and i can see it happening but cutting itself off from the rest of the net won't work because it can and would be attacked from within it's own country. (enemy within)

if ever they do disconnect from the net then the cyber terrorists will already have won lmao

i think they realize that the net has taken over every aspect of our lives and if hit by a cyber attack could fuck the usa and any other country up better than any bombs ever could.

at one time we had a paper trail for every banking transaction, crime, school report, sports event. now it's all store in chips on computers and servers that can be made obsolete with a single cyber attack.

good isn't it. and these pricks think that by isolating their net to their own country they'll be safe. for some asinine reason they think the attack will come from a state outside their border.

the cut off switch isn't about censorship as far as i know. it's about staving off cyber terrorism.

as for it being unconstitutional. i'd agree except for their excuse of protecting the country from outside invasion during times of war.

i think they're trying to redefine what war and terrorism is in order to have more control. during war military rules have precedence over civilian law i think it's in the constitution somewhere lol.

the thing is, the cut off or patch could and probably would be used in a similar way china and iran use theirs.

lets take file sharing. all they'd have do is show one file connected to terrorism on tpb and wham they could say they were scared of a cyber plot. all isp who allow tpb to run get terminated from all contact with the usa. i can't see that happening but is it possible? if it then it really scary shit.
