The Last Laugh
Make me laugh before I die
that I may wear a smile, though wry,
upon my death mask, and with luck,
(frankly, I never gave a fuck)
my few remaining friends will grin.
To laugh at death is not a sin;
indeed, the last breath should be fun
and bottled, as was Edison's.
How did they know which suck would send him
to his final, fateful ending?
Make no mistake when last I pull
on God's good air, one gasped lung full,
it's only to supply a laugh.
Please someone, take a photograph.

Truly, very fun. and inspired, I think. a smiling death mask—what an image! I once tried psilocybin...magic mushrooms...under er...controlled conditions. My wife was concerned that I might die of laughter. I had no such worries...but now I'm not so sure!

Moment of death is a hard thing to predict. Maybe if you reran it often in your mind with a grin, your brain would do it at the right time. Or a loved one might be able to manipulate it, I don't know, I've never tried. If you're planning to lie around in a casket for a few days, I'm sure your request could be accommodated.

Supposedly asphyxiating with helium produces this effect. Also overdosing on NO. The whole poem seems to refer to one or the other. Just rename it NO Suicide.

Whole thing came from trivia on recent radio. Edison's last breath was captured by Ford. Can you imagine the conversation around the death bed? Was that it, Henry? You got it good? Aw fuck...he's started again. Get another bottle, quick...for fuck's sake...hurry it up....yeah...it's comin', it's comin'....got it, yehah...got it. Whoa, hold on, he's smilin'...the wily ol' coyotee! He ain't dead...aw shit, he's fuckin' with us....somebody get a pillow...Thomas you sonofabitch..this IS your last breath....not smilin' now, huh.

Give good and honest feedback is what it says somewhere hereabouts - if that means criticism then sorry I couldn't find fault with this. An enjoyable laugh which we could do with a lot more.
Pleased there is such a place on this forum where such trivialities can be posted and appreciated for what they are.
Cheers - Richard.
I suggest you read the rules for each individual forum here. There are quite a few where critique is unnecessary, this is one of them. Dig a little, although the workshops may be the site's main focus, it has many backroads.
